SRT timestamp shifter

By the Potok teamUpdated ~1 min read

An SRT timestamp shifter moves every SRT time written as hh:mm:ss,mmm by a fixed number of seconds. The page shows the default example: two cues shifted by plus 2 seconds, so 00:00:01,000 becomes 00:00:03,000. A negative shift cannot go below zero.

Key facts

  • Both times of every cue move together, so the length of each cue stays the same and only the start of the whole track changes.
  • The example page is static: it prints the original SRT and the shifted SRT side by side with a shift of 2 seconds, and has no input field.
  • The shifter looks for times written as hh:mm:ss,mmm with a comma. Times in WebVTT form, with a period, are left alone.
  • A result below zero is set to 00:00:00,000, so a large negative shift can make several cues start at the same moment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delay subtitles by two seconds?

Add 2 to every start and end time in the file. The example shows the first cue moving from 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500 to 00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:05,500.

How do I make subtitles appear earlier?

Use a negative number of seconds, which subtracts from every time. Any time that would fall below zero is set to 00:00:00,000.

Does the shift change the subtitle text?

No. Only the numbers in the time lines change. The cue numbers, the text and the blank lines between cues stay exactly as they were.

Can I shift a WebVTT file the same way?

The idea is the same, but this shifter reads the comma form of SRT only. Convert the WebVTT file to SRT first, or shift the times in the original by hand.

Why do shifted cues still drift out of sync?

A fixed shift fixes a constant offset only. If the delay grows through the video, that often points to a frame-rate or edit mismatch, which one fixed shift cannot correct.
