SRT to VTT converter

By the Potok teamUpdated ~1 min read

Converting SRT to VTT for the sample cues changes two things: a WEBVTT header line is added at the top, and the decimal separator in each time moves from a comma to a period. The page shows the same 2 cues in SRT and then in WebVTT, so you can compare the files line by line.

Key facts

  • The text, the cue numbers and the arrow between the start and end times stay as they are in the converted output.
  • A WebVTT file must begin with the word WEBVTT on its first line, followed by a blank line, and SRT has no such line.
  • The page uses a fixed two-cue sample with no paste box, so apply the rule to your own file.
  • Cue numbers are optional in WebVTT, where they are called cue identifiers, so keeping them is allowed.
  • A real file may need more than these two changes, so check the result in a player.

The conversion changes the first line (WEBVTT), the comma before milliseconds to a period, and drops cue numbers where you wish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

The text and the time ranges look alike. WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header and writes milliseconds after a period, while SRT writes them after a comma.

How do I convert SRT to VTT by hand?

Add a first line with WEBVTT and a blank line after it. Then replace the comma with a period in every time that looks like 00:00:01,000.

Do I have to remove the cue numbers?

No. WebVTT allows an identifier line before the time line, so the numbered cues from SRT are valid. The example keeps them.

Where is WebVTT used?

WebVTT is the text track format for web video. If a page player asks for a track file, VTT is the format it expects.

Can I get both formats from a transcript?

Yes. The bot can export a transcript as SRT or VTT, so a conversion is only needed for a subtitle file you already have.
