Timestamp converter

By the Potok teamUpdated ~1 min read

A timestamp converter writes a number of seconds as hh:mm:ss, the form used in subtitle files. The form starts at 90 seconds, which gives 00:01:30 in plain form, 00:01:30,000 for SRT and 00:01:30.000 for VTT. Only the separator before the milliseconds differs.

Key facts

  • The direction is seconds in, time out: you enter seconds, and the result shows the hours, minutes and seconds with milliseconds.
  • Fractions are rounded to the nearest millisecond, so 59.5 seconds is written 00:00:59,500 in SRT and 00:00:59.500 in VTT.
  • A negative value shows a dash, since a time on the timeline cannot be below zero, and an empty field is read as zero.
  • The table lists six fixed values, from 1 to 5400 seconds. The last row is 01:30:00,000 in SRT and 01:30:00.000 in VTT.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert seconds to hh:mm:ss?

Divide by 3600 for hours, take the remainder and divide it by 60 for minutes, and what is left is the seconds. For 5400 seconds that is 01:30:00.

What is the difference between the SRT and VTT forms?

Both write three digits of milliseconds. SRT puts a comma before them, as in 00:01:30,000, and VTT puts a period, as in 00:01:30.000.

Why does the result keep the leading zeros?

SRT always writes hh:mm:ss,mmm, with two digits for hours, minutes and seconds and three for milliseconds, while WebVTT allows the hours part to be left out. This form always writes the hours, so the zeros keep the time in one fixed layout.

What does 600 seconds look like?

It is ten minutes, written 00:10:00. In SRT the full form is 00:10:00,000, and in VTT it is 00:10:00.000.

Does the converter turn a time back into seconds?

No. The form accepts seconds only. To go back, multiply the hours by 3600 and the minutes by 60, then add the seconds.
