Microsoft Teams recording to text

By the Potok teamUpdated ~2 min read

To turn a Microsoft Teams recording into text, download the video and send it to the Potok bot on Telegram. Teams recordings are saved to OneDrive or SharePoint as video files, and a recording can be downloaded from there. Files up to 2 GB work, and the text exports as TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT or VTT.

Key facts

  • Where a recording lands, OneDrive or SharePoint, depends on how the meeting was set up.
  • A Teams recording is a video file, and the bot uses its audio track.
  • Work meetings often have many voices, so speaker labels make minutes easier to write.
  • Access follows your organization's rules, so you may need permission to download.

How to do it

  1. Find the recording. Open the meeting chat or the OneDrive or SharePoint folder where it was saved.
  2. Download it. Use the download option if your account has access. Ask the meeting owner if you do not.
  3. Check the size. Hour-long meetings are large. For a file near 2 GB, use the Upload button of the mini app.
  4. Send to the bot. Open @potok_now_bot and attach the video as a document.
  5. Create minutes. Turn on labels and timestamps, then export DOCX and edit it into minutes.

What the result looks like

Example: the start of a project meeting

[00:00] Speaker 1: Let's review the open tasks for the sprint.

[00:05] Speaker 2: The login fix is merged and waiting for tests.

[00:10] Speaker 3: I can take the reporting task if nobody objects.
