Voice input in 1C, ConsultantPlus and other industry programs

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~7 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

Voice input in industry programs such as 1C, ConsultantPlus or Garant works the same way as in any other app: the hotkey inserts text into the field where the cursor is, including specialized forms and document cards. Potok (potok.now) has a response time of about 0.4 seconds, and the personal dictionary of terms helps industry vocabulary be recognized as accurately as ordinary speech.

Industry programs (1C, ConsultantPlus, Garant, medical and accounting systems) often require entering a lot of text into forms and document cards. Voice input speeds up exactly this routine: not a separate function of the program itself, but a system hotkey that works on top of any of its windows.

What voice input in industry programs is

Industry programs are specialized software for a specific profession: 1C for accounting and document flow, ConsultantPlus and Garant for lawyers, medical information systems such as Infoclinica for doctors. Unlike universal apps such as email or notes, here there are many fields of a special format: an account number, a document date, a diagnosis, an article of law.

Voice input in such a program is not a built-in function of 1C or ConsultantPlus itself but a separate program that works on top of the system regardless of what the program itself can do. It catches the hotkey press, records the voice, recognizes the speech and inserts the ready text where the cursor is: into a comment field, an operation description, the text of a statement of claim. The program does not parse the structure of the document card: it simply types what you dictated into the active field, like an ordinary keyboard.

Voice input by industry program

Where Potok will not help

Potok will not put data into the right fields of a document card and will not check that the details are correct: it only types what you dictated into the active text field. Potok is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia; it does not work without the internet, and in 1C or ConsultantPlus the hotkey will be pressed but the text will not appear. In protected fields with a limit on text insertion the program is powerless too.

Frequently asked questions

Does voice input understand professional terms in 1C or ConsultantPlus?

It understands them better if the terms are added to the personal dictionary in advance: account codes, counterparty names and legal wording are recognized more accurately when the program already “knows” the word. Without a dictionary, rare terms may be recognized as similar-sounding common words.

Can I dictate text straight into a protected field of a program?

Not always: if a field technically forbids inserting text by third-party programs, for example some forms with input checking, voice input will not work there, just as ordinary pasting through the clipboard will not work. This is a limit of the field itself, not of a specific dictation program.

How many characters per minute can you dictate?

By a model estimate, the average dictation speed with Potok is about 900 characters per minute versus about 200 characters per minute with ordinary typing, so speech is noticeably faster than the keyboard.

Is there voice input on a computer without installing programs?

Yes: Windows has built-in voice typing via Win+H (Russian only in Windows 11, Windows 10 has no Russian; it does not work without the internet), and the Mac has system dictation in the keyboard settings. Both are free.

Does voice input work with any microphone?

Any microphone the system sees as a recording device will do. In Potok you choose it in the app settings or in the tray icon menu; system access to the microphone is required.

How much faster is voice input than the keyboard?

Potok states about 900 characters per minute by voice versus about 200 when typing, roughly 4 times faster. This is the product's own estimate, not an independent measurement.
