Voice input in Telegram: ways to dictate a message

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~4 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

Telegram has no button of its own for voice input. The message field is an ordinary text field and accepts pasted text, so you can dictate a message with the operating system's dictation or with the Potok app (potok.now): it recognizes about 900 characters per minute and inserts the text straight into the chat.

Telegram has no separate button for voice text input, but you can still dictate a message instead of typing it by hand.

Ways to dictate text in Telegram

There is no button of its own for voice input in Telegram, so you cannot dictate a message with the messenger's own tools. The message field, however, is an ordinary text field: it accepts pasted text regardless of where it came from, so any third-party tool will do. A detailed look at a specific task is on the page about how to dictate a post to a Telegram channel.

Windows 11 has system dictation Win+H: it recognizes speech in the Microsoft cloud and works in any text field, including Telegram, but it does not work without the internet, and on Windows 10 it has no Russian. macOS has built-in dictation with Russian support.

Another way is the Potok app (potok.now): it dictates not into a specific messenger but into any active text field. It works simply: you hold the hotkey (Ctrl+Space by default), say the message and release the key, and the text appears in the input field. Potok places punctuation and capital letters itself.

Long texts and line breaks

There is no data on how exactly Telegram handles long dictated messages and line breaks in the input field. Only the general rule is known: Potok has no voice commands, so you cannot set a line break or the structure of the text by voice. They have to be added by hand from the keyboard after the text has been inserted. Each press and release of the hotkey inserts one continuous piece of text, so a long message is worth rereading before sending.

Limits that cannot be worked around

Potok is a cloud service: recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without the internet. It has no offline mode, no voice commands and no phone app. 2500 words per week are available for free on one device, and for someone who chats a lot in Telegram every day this limit may not be enough.

A similar look at the free limit and the hotkey is on the page about voice input in Google Docs. If your messages are short, typing them is usually faster than setting up dictation, and you do not need a separate tool here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I dictate a message in Telegram by voice?

Telegram has no button of its own for this, but the message field accepts pasted text. You can dictate a message with the operating system's dictation or with the Potok app, which inserts text straight into the input field.

What is voice text input and how does it work?

Voice input turns speech into text on the fly: the user speaks, the program transcribes the sound with speech recognition technology (ASR) and inserts the resulting text into the active field, such as email, a messenger or a document. In Potok this works through a hotkey: hold it, speak, release, and the text is inserted.

How much faster is voice input than the keyboard?

Potok states about 900 characters per minute by voice versus about 200 when typing, roughly 4 times faster. This is the product's own estimate, not an independent measurement.

How many characters per minute can you dictate?

By a model estimate, the average dictation speed with Potok is about 900 characters per minute versus about 200 characters per minute with ordinary typing, so speech is noticeably faster than the keyboard.

What ways of entering text by voice are there besides specialized programs?

Built-in system tools (Win+H in Windows, Dictation in macOS, Voice Typing in Google Docs, Gboard on Android), voice browser extensions, and specialized desktop and web services (Potok and similar) that work on top of any app via a hotkey.

When is dictating more efficient than typing?

Dictation pays off most for long texts written in one go, such as email drafts, notes, messenger replies and lecture notes, and also when your hands are busy or tired (for example, with RSI). For short precise edits (one-word commands, code) typing is often faster.
