“Dictation isn't available in this language” (Russian): what to do

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~6 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

In Windows 10 this message is expected for Russian: its voice typing has no Russian, and settings will not help. In Windows 11 it usually means that the required language component is not installed for Russian or another input language is active. If that does not help, Potok (potok.now) will: it does not need Windows language packs.

What this message means

The message “Dictation isn't available in this language” is shown by the voice typing panel built into Windows, the one that opens with the Win+H key combination in any text field. It is not tied to the browser or a specific program: the error occurs at the operating system level, because the voice typing panel can work only with languages for which a separate speech recognition pack has been downloaded to the computer in advance.

First check the system version: Win+R, the winver command. If it says Windows 10, you can stop reading here. According to Microsoft's help, Windows 10 voice typing knows English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Chinese. Russian is not on this list, so the message will appear with any settings. There are two options: upgrade to Windows 11 or install a separate dictation app.

Windows 11 has Russian, and there the message means something else: the system cannot find the language component needed for speech recognition. Sometimes the wording is “unavailable in this language”, sometimes the panel simply does not open. The causes and steps below apply to Windows 11.

It is important to tell this dictation apart from the newer Voice Access feature, which appeared in Windows 11 for controlling the system by voice. It has its own way of being turned on, and according to Microsoft's help, Voice Access does not support Russian. Below we are talking specifically about ordinary text dictation via Win+H, which is what people most often run into when trying to dictate Russian text.

Two likely causes on Windows 11

  1. Russian is not added in the system. The Win+H dictation panel can recognize only languages that are added in the Language & region section. Having a Russian interface or keyboard layout does not guarantee that Russian is the language selected for speech recognition.
  2. Another input language is active. The dictation panel follows the current input language at the moment it is launched. If English or another language is the default, Windows tries to recognize speech in that language rather than in Russian.

How to fix it: step by step

  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region and make sure Russian is added to the list. If it is not there, add it.
  2. Check that Russian is set as the active input language right before you open dictation with Win+H; you can switch the layout with the language icon in the tray or with Win+Space.

If nothing helped: a path without reinstalling Windows

If Russian is added and set as the active input language but the message “Dictation isn't available in this language” still appears, it is not worth reinstalling the whole system for the sake of voice input.

It is simpler to install a separate dictation app that does not rely on Windows language packs at all. Potok works exactly like this: it recognizes Russian speech through its own cloud recognition, without downloading Windows language components. Hold Ctrl+Space in any text field of any app, say the phrase, release, and the text appears where the cursor was.

Potok is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia; it does not work without the internet.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Windows say “Dictation isn't available in this language” specifically for Russian?

If you have Windows 10, there is only one reason: its voice typing has no Russian at all. Windows 11 has Russian, but the built-in dictation works only with languages that are installed and selected in the settings. If Russian is not installed or another input language is active, the system shows this message.

Can the error be fixed without reinstalling Windows?

In Windows 11, yes, in most cases. In Windows 10, no: its voice typing has no Russian, and only moving to Windows 11 or a separate app will help. In Windows 11 it is usually enough to add Russian in the settings and make it the active input language; there is no need to touch Windows as a whole.

The Russian pack is downloaded, but the error still pops up. What then?

Most often the cause is the input language: Russian is installed, but the active keyboard layout or the interface language differs from it.

Does Potok work if Windows has no Russian language pack?

Yes. Potok does not use Windows language packs: recognition runs on its own servers, so this error does not affect Potok.

How much faster is voice input than the keyboard?

Potok states about 900 characters per minute by voice versus about 200 when typing, roughly 4 times faster. This is the product's own estimate, not an independent measurement.

When is dictating more efficient than typing?

Dictation pays off most for long texts written in one go, such as email drafts, notes, messenger replies and lecture notes, and also when your hands are busy or tired (for example, with RSI). For short precise edits (one-word commands, code) typing is often faster.
