Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.
Voice input through CarPlay behaves differently from direct dictation on iPhone because, for safety reasons, CarPlay uses a simplified interface that prioritizes Siri while you drive, not the regular dictation panel in a text field. For messages in the car you need Siri voice commands through CarPlay. These are 2 different input scenarios, not one and the same screen.
If dictation through CarPlay in the car does not work the way ordinary dictation directly on the iPhone does, this is not a fault. While you drive, Apple deliberately changes how text is entered, to distract you less from the road.
The quickest solution
You cannot bring back the usual dictation panel, as on the iPhone itself, while driving: CarPlay does not show it. Instead, Siri voice commands are provided for messages and notes in the car. A voice command or a button on the steering wheel calls Siri, and the text is dictated through a voice request to it, not through a separate input field on the screen. This is not a failure of a specific app and not a one-off case: Apple deliberately removed direct dictation from the CarPlay interface in favor of the voice assistant.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Dictating messages through the CarPlay screen in a car does not work the way ordinary dictation on the iPhone itself does | For safety reasons while driving, CarPlay uses a simplified input interface that prioritizes Siri, and not direct dictation into a text field | To enter text while driving, use Siri voice commands through CarPlay instead of trying to bring up the ordinary dictation panel |
Why this happens at all
CarPlay was designed on the assumption that a person behind the wheel should look at the screen as little as possible and touch it as little as possible. Direct dictation into a text field means a separate screen, a cursor, and usually a glance at the keyboard to check that the recognition is right. Apple judged such an input scenario less safe while driving, so CarPlay uses not the dictation panel but Siri for entering text: a voice assistant that you can interact with without looking at the screen or touching it. On the iPhone itself, when the car is stopped or the phone is in your hand, there is no such restriction, so both regular dictation and Siri are available there at the same time. This difference in behavior is not tied to a specific iPhone model or iOS version. It is built into the architecture of CarPlay as a safer but narrower input interface. Other differences in how voice input behaves on Apple devices are collected in the Apple section.

How to avoid running into this again
- While driving, use Siri commands right away instead of looking for the dictation panel: CarPlay does not have it, by design.
- Practice dictating messages through Siri at home or in a parking lot in advance, so that you do not have to figure out the new way of input while moving.
- If direct dictation into a text field is what you need, put such messages off until you stop and type them on the iPhone itself.
- Do not treat the difference in behavior as a malfunction: there is no point in complaining to support or reinstalling CarPlay, this is standard system behavior.
Who this path is not for
This path is not for you if you need voice input on a phone in general, and not in the car through CarPlay: Potok does not exist on phones, tablets or watches, it works only on a computer, on Windows, macOS and Linux. Potok is a cloud service, it recognizes speech on servers in Russia and does not work without the internet either, so it does not remove the difference between CarPlay and dictation on the iPhone and has nothing to do with this situation. If you dictate a lot specifically at a computer, Potok can replace the built-in dictation there. If dictation is acting up not in the car but on the computer itself, check the breakdown of why dictation does not work on a MacBook.
Frequently asked questions
No. CarPlay does not show a separate dictation panel, and this is a deliberate interface restriction for safety while driving. The only way to dictate text through CarPlay is Siri voice commands; regular dictation stays available only on the iPhone itself.
Any microphone the system sees as a recording device will do. In Potok you choose it in the app settings or in the tray icon menu; system access to the microphone is required.
By a model estimate, the average dictation speed with Potok is about 900 characters per minute versus about 200 characters per minute with ordinary typing, so speech is noticeably faster than the keyboard.
Built-in system tools (Win+H in Windows, Dictation in macOS, Voice Typing in Google Docs, Gboard on Android), voice browser extensions, and specialized desktop and web services (Potok and similar) that work on top of any app via a hotkey.
Voice input converts speech to text on the fly: the user speaks, and the program transcribes the sound with speech recognition technology (ASR) and inserts the resulting text into the active field, such as email, a messenger or a document. In Potok it works through a hotkey: hold it, speak, release, and the text is inserted.
Dictation pays off most for long texts written off the cuff: email drafts, notes, replies in messengers, lecture notes, and also when your hands are busy or tired (for example with RSI). For short precise edits (one-word commands, code), typing is often faster.
