Windows says dictation is unavailable in Russian

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~6 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

Windows says dictation is unavailable in Russian because the built-in dictation (Win+H) in Windows 10 supports only 7 languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish), and Russian is not among them. There is no official way to add Russian in Windows 10: it appears only in Windows 11. For dictation in Russian right now you can try Potok (potok.now).

A user presses Win+H, switches to the Russian layout, and sees that dictation either does not start or clearly says it is unavailable for the current language. The cause is not the keyboard layout and not the microphone: Russian is simply not in the list that Windows 10 built-in dictation supports.

What the message that dictation is unavailable in Russian looks like in Windows

The user turns on the built-in dictation with Win+H, switches the input language to Russian, and gets not text but a message or a clear indicator that recognition is unavailable for the current language. The first thought is usually about a breakdown: maybe the language settings got lost, maybe it is the microphone or a particular Windows build. In fact the cause is simpler and at the same time less obvious: Windows 10 built-in dictation has an official list of supported languages, and Russian is simply not included in it, like almost all the languages of the world that are not in this list of seven. This is not a one-off failure on a particular computer but a property of the feature itself in this version of Windows.

SymptomCauseFix
The user cannot dictate text in Russian through built-in dictationThe official list of languages supported by built-in dictation (Win+H) in Windows 10: Simplified Chinese, English (Australia, Canada, India, UK), French (France, Canada), German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Mexico, Spain); Russian is not on this list. There is no official way to turn on Russian for built-in dictation in Windows 10; the option is to move to Windows 11, where voice typing officially supports Russian.

What this unavailability actually means

Nothing is broken and nothing turned off by itself: the official list of languages supported by built-in dictation (Win+H) in Windows 10 is Simplified Chinese, English (in the variants Australia, Canada, India, UK), French (France, Canada), German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Mexico, Spain). It is a closed list: a language that is not in it simply does not exist for this feature, regardless of the interface language, the keyboard layout or the regional settings of the computer. Russian is not in this list in any variant, and this limit applies to the version of the feature in Windows 10, not to individual computers or builds.

What to do if you need dictation in Russian

  1. Check the official list of languages supported by Windows 10 built-in dictation. If the language you need (for example English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Chinese) is in it, switch the input language to it in the speech settings.
  2. If you need Russian specifically, there is no official way to add it to Windows 10 built-in dictation: no language pack extends this feature.
  3. The only official way to get voice input in Russian with Windows itself is to move to Windows 11, where voice typing supports Russian out of the box.
  4. If moving to Windows 11 is not possible now and you need dictation in Russian today, you can try a separate app for this, for example Potok (potok.now).

Who none of these options suit

Waiting to move to Windows 11 does not suit everyone, for example if the computer is a work one and the update is not in your hands, or the move is impossible right now for other reasons. Potok is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without the internet. Other voice input errors connected with Russian and Windows are collected in the section “win h writes in English” and in the general section “voice input does not work”.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a way around this limit through a language pack or by downloading recognition files?

No: the list of languages supported by Windows 10 built-in dictation is fixed and is not extended by language packs or by separately downloading speech recognition files; Russian is not in this list no matter what else is installed on the computer. The only official way to get Russian in this feature is to move to Windows 11.

Why does Windows voice typing understand Russian poorly?

Windows 10's built-in voice typing has no Russian at all; it exists only in Windows 11. If Russian speech is recognized poorly in Windows 11, Microsoft advises checking that Russian is selected as the input language (Win+Space), that the right microphone is selected in Settings → System → Sound → Input, and trying a headset or an external microphone instead of the built-in one. Potok is a separate app with its own model trained for Russian speech, including terms and Russian mixed with English.

How is Potok different from Voice Access (Windows 11 Voice Access)?

Voice Access is a system feature for controlling the computer and entering text by voice, but it officially does not support Russian (its list of supported languages is English, Spanish, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Italian). Potok is built specifically for Russian speech and works as a separate app on top of any program.

Can Windows 11 voice typing be installed on Windows 10?

No: voice typing with extended language support (including Russian) is a built-in feature of Windows 11 specifically, and it cannot be moved or installed on Windows 10 separately. Windows 10 has an older version of dictation with fewer languages (without Russian).

Why did voice input disappear after a Windows update?

Microsoft names the typical causes: the microphone is not selected as the input device, apps have no access to the microphone, or the current language is not supported by voice typing. To check: Settings → System → Sound → Input; Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone; the input language (Win+Space). Voice typing also does not work if Online speech recognition is turned off in Settings → Privacy & security → Speech.

How do I turn off voice input in Windows 11?

Windows voice input does not turn on by itself: the panel opens only with Win+H or the microphone button on the touch keyboard. It works through the cloud “Online speech recognition”: if you turn it off in Settings → Privacy & security → Speech, Windows will use only on-device recognition, and voice input will not work. In an organization an administrator can turn off speech services with a group policy.

Try it on your own texts
