Dictation on Mac and iPhone does not work in Russian: what to do

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~8 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

Apple's system dictation on iPhone and Mac supports Russian, but sometimes mixes up word endings, loses punctuation and cuts off long phrases. Usually the recognition language, the connection or the microphone is to blame. Below are repair steps for both platforms, and for Mac there is an alternative: Potok (potok.now) with the Ctrl+Space hotkey, 14 days of free access and a personal dictionary in the Pro subscription.

Why Apple system dictation sometimes does not understand Russian

Dictation in iOS and macOS is a shared function for dozens of languages. Russian is on the list of supported ones, but Apple Intelligence features do not support Russian, so you should not expect smart text refinement in Russian. In practice this turns into typical complaints: dictation mixes up case endings, “swallows” unstressed vowels in fluent speech, places punctuation wrongly or even switches to the English layout in the middle of a phrase.

The second common cause lies in the device settings, not in the recognition engine. If Russian is not first in the keyboard language list, or the iPhone region is not set to “Russia”, dictation may recognize speech through an English or mixed language model. That is where strange phrases instead of coherent text come from. The third cause is the communication channel. According to Apple's help, on a Mac with Apple Silicon and a current macOS ordinary dictation is processed on the device itself, while on an Intel Mac and in some other scenarios the audio goes to Apple's servers. In such cases on weak Wi-Fi or in roaming the text arrives late, in fragments or not at all.

Finally, hardware matters too: a microphone muffled by a case, a noisy room, a cheap Bluetooth headset with a cut-down frequency band, all of which reduce the quality of the input signal before recognition even gets to work.

How to turn on and set up dictation on iPhone and Mac

On iPhone and iPad: open Settings → General → Keyboard and turn on the “Enable Dictation” toggle. Then go to Settings → General → Language & Region and make sure Russian is first in the preferred languages and the region is “Russia”: dictation goes by exactly this order. If dictation does not appear on the keyboard, check Screen Time → Content & Privacy → Allowed Apps: dictation itself may be turned off there as a separate item.

On Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, turn the function on and choose the language “Russian (Russia)” in the drop-down list. On a Mac with Apple Silicon, speech is recognized locally, without being sent to Apple's servers. You can check how this works on your computer in the same keyboard settings.

Once turned on, dictation is called by pressing the Fn key (Mac) twice or by the microphone icon on the keyboard (iPhone). If there is no icon, reinstall the standard Apple keyboard instead of a third-party input tool: many third-party keyboards have no dictation button of their own at all.

Common failures and how to get around them

Dictation is silent or does not start. Check the microphone permission for the specific app where you dictate: Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone on iPhone, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone on Mac. The permission is granted at the app level, and it is easy to forget to confirm it in a new messenger or editor.

The text breaks off in the middle of a phrase. A system dictation session is not endless and may stop after a long pause, so speak in shorter pieces or dictate paragraph by paragraph, starting dictation again for each one.

Punctuation disappears. Apple dictation can place it by voice: say “zapyataya” (comma), “tochka” (period), “novaya stroka” (new line), “voprositelnyy znak” (question mark) right in the flow of speech; on its own it does not always place punctuation reliably, especially in long sentences.

Dictation disappeared altogether after an update. iOS and macOS updates sometimes reset the chosen language or the dictation toggle to the default value, so go through the settings from the section above again. If nothing helps, a simple restart of the device and a check that the current version of the system is installed helps.

When you need a separate program and not system dictation

On iPhone and iPad there is in fact no alternative to Apple's system dictation: we cannot offer a separate mobile app for voice input in Russian with the same level of keyboard integration, since Potok has no mobile version. Here all that remains is to set up and put up with the built-in dictation, following the steps in the sections above.

On Mac the situation is different. If system dictation is not enough for work tasks (it does not remember professional terms, names and abbreviations, breaks off on long dictations, and requires you to say punctuation aloud), it makes sense to install a separate voice input program. Potok is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux: you hold the Ctrl+Space hotkey, dictate, release, and the finished text with punctuation is put at once into the field where the cursor was, in any app. In the Pro subscription, Potok lets you create a personal dictionary of names, terms and abbreviations. Dictation speed is about 900 characters per minute with a response time of about 0.4 seconds.

Potok is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia; it does not work without the internet. For the first 14 days all features are available for free and without a card attached, after that comes the Free plan at 0 ₽ (2500 words per week) or Pro at 690 ₽ per month (499 ₽ per month when paying for a year).

Frequently asked questions

Why does Apple dictation periodically fail to understand Russian speech on iPhone and Mac?

Most often the cause is the recognition language (not Russian is selected, or the region is not Russia), a weak internet connection, background noise and a microphone covered by a case. Less often it is an outdated version of iOS or macOS or Screen Time restrictions that are turned on.

Dictation disappeared from the settings on Mac. How do I bring it back?

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, turn on the toggle and choose the Russian language. After a macOS update the setting is sometimes reset, so check it again.

Do I need the internet for voice input in Potok?

Yes. Potok is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia; it does not work without the internet. This is a deliberate choice for the sake of speed and recognition quality in Russian.

How is Potok different from Apple's system dictation on Mac?

Potok works by the Ctrl+Space hotkey in any app, does not cut off a long dictation, and in the Pro subscription keeps a personal dictionary of terms and names. Potok has no app for iPhone; there only Apple's system dictation is available.

How do I turn on dictation on Mac without a time limit?

You do not need to turn anything on: according to Apple's help, you can dictate text of any length with no time limit. Dictation stops by itself only if no speech is heard for 30 seconds.

What is the best voice input program for Mac in Russian?

The built-in macOS Dictation supports Russian. Potok is a separate app with its own model trained for Russian speech, including terms and Russian mixed with English; the text is inserted into the active field of any app.
