How to add Russian speech recognition in Windows 10 Home

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~5 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

In Windows 10 you cannot officially add Russian speech recognition for voice input in any edition, including Home: Microsoft did not include Russian in the list of languages supported by voice typing for this version of the system. Official support appeared only in Windows 11. If upgrading the OS is not an option, try Potok (potok.now), with 14 days of full access for free.

Voice input in Windows 10 Home works, but its list of recognition languages does not include Russian, and the reason is not that a different edition of the system is needed.

Why this happens

Microsoft sets the list of languages supported by voice typing at the level of Windows 10 itself, not at the level of the edition: Russian is not there in Home, Pro or other editions of this version of the system. The confusion arises because Windows 10 has one more, older tool, the classic Windows Speech Recognition, whose list of supported languages is even shorter, and it does not settle the question of Russian either. Microsoft added official support for Russian for voice input only in Windows 11. You can read more about the fate of classic speech recognition in the article what happened to Windows Speech Recognition in newer versions.

SymptomCauseFix
The user is trying to get Russian speech recognition on Windows 10 Home specificallyThe limitation is not by edition (Home/Pro): in the official list of languages supported by built-in dictation in Windows 10, Russian is absent in every edition; for classic Windows Speech Recognition the language list is even narrower. There is no official way to add Russian for voice input in Windows 10 specifically; official support for Russian in voice typing requires Windows 11.

How to fix it step by step

  1. Make sure the cause really is the system version and not a separate setting: there is no official switch or language pack that adds Russian to voice typing specifically for Windows 10.
  2. If moving to a newer system is possible, upgrade to Windows 11. There Russian is officially on the list of languages supported for voice input.
  3. If you have to stay on Windows 10, use a separate third-party app for voice input in Russian instead of the built-in tool: for example, Potok (potok.now). It installs on Windows 10 and works regardless of which languages the system dictation supports.
  4. There is no point in checking classic Windows Speech Recognition for the sake of Russian: its list of languages is even narrower than that of voice typing, and Russian is not officially there either.

If it did not help

If an upgrade to Windows 11 is not available, and you have already tried a third-party app and it did not fit either, the next step is to look at other Windows voice input errors, for example in the section of Windows errors, where similar cases are collected. Potok (potok.now) is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without the internet. By itself it does not change the list of languages of Windows 10 system dictation, it just works next to it as a separate app.

Frequently asked questions

Is this limitation different for Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Home

No. According to official data the limitation is not tied to the edition: Russian is not on the list of languages supported by voice typing in Home, Pro or other editions of Windows 10. It is a matter of the operating system version, not the feature set of a particular edition.

Does Windows 10 support voice input in Russian?

Officially no: the built-in Win+H dictation in Windows 10 supports Simplified Chinese, English (several regions), French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish; Russian is not on this list. Voice input in Russian requires Windows 11.

Can I use Win+H and a third-party voice input program at the same time?

Yes, they use different shortcuts: Win+H opens Windows voice input, while Potok works by Ctrl+Space by default. For a single phrase it is more convenient to use just one of them.

How do I turn on voice input in Windows 10?

Press Win+H in any text field and the built-in dictation panel opens; for controlling the computer by voice there is a separate Windows Speech Recognition feature (Win+Ctrl+S).

Does voice input work through a remote desktop (RDP)?

Windows voice input listens to the microphone of the machine where it runs. In an RDP session your computer's microphone is available to the remote machine only if audio recording redirection is enabled (in the RDP client: Local Resources → Remote audio → record from this computer). In addition, Win+H on the remote machine needs the internet: recognition runs in the Microsoft cloud.

Why does Windows voice input understand Russian poorly?

Windows 10 has no Russian in built-in voice input at all; it exists only in Windows 11. If Russian speech is recognized poorly in Windows 11, Microsoft advises checking that the Russian input language is selected (Win+Space), that the right microphone is selected in Settings → System → Sound → Input, and trying a headset or an external microphone instead of the built-in one. Potok is a separate app with its own model trained for Russian speech, including terms and Russian mixed with English.

How to start
