How to dictate a message in Telegram: steps and hotkey

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~4 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

Open a chat in Telegram, put the cursor in the input field and dictate the message with the Potok app (potok.now): hold the hotkey (Ctrl+Space by default), say the text and release the key, and the text is inserted into the field. Potok recognizes about 900 characters per minute and adds punctuation itself.

Do you want to dictate a Telegram message by voice instead of typing it by hand? The messenger has no dictation of its own, but you can dictate text with a third-party tool right into the input field.

Step by step in Telegram

  1. Install Potok and allow it system access to the microphone. Dictation does not work without it.
  2. Choose the microphone you need in the Potok settings or in the menu of its tray icon.
  3. Open the chat you need in Telegram and put the cursor in the message field.
  4. Hold the hotkey (Ctrl+Space by default) and dictate the message in Russian.
  5. Release the key: the text appears in the input field, and Potok adds punctuation and capital letters itself.
  6. Check the text and send the message as usual.

These steps work for both the desktop Telegram app and the browser version: Potok inserts text into the active field no matter which program it is.

What the text looks like after pasting

The text appears in the Telegram input field all at once, as one piece, with a single press and release of the hotkey. Potok adds punctuation and capital letters itself; you do not need to say “zapyataya” (comma) or “tochka” (period) separately.

Potok has no voice commands, so a line break or a split into paragraphs, if the message is long, has to be added by hand after pasting. The Telegram message field accepts pasted text as ordinary text, with no limits at this level. A similar look at text format is on the page about how to dictate a post in a Telegram channel.

Telegram limits that get in the way

Potok is a cloud service: recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without the internet. It has no voice commands and no offline mode, so the layout of a long message, line breaks and paragraphs, has to be added by hand after the text is inserted.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to dictate punctuation separately in a Telegram message?

No, Potok adds punctuation and capital letters automatically. You do not need to say “zapyataya” (comma) or “tochka” (period): the text is inserted into the message field already punctuated.

How many characters per minute can you dictate?

By a model estimate, the average dictation speed with Potok is about 900 characters per minute versus about 200 characters per minute with ordinary typing, so speech is noticeably faster than the keyboard.

Does voice input work with any microphone?

Any microphone the system sees as a recording device will do. In Potok you choose it in the app settings or in the tray icon menu; system access to the microphone is required.

What is voice text input and how does it work?

Voice input is the conversion of speech to text on the fly: the user speaks, and the program transcribes the sound with speech recognition technology (ASR) and inserts the resulting text into the active field, such as email, a messenger or a document. In Potok this works through a hotkey: hold it, speak, release, and the text is inserted.

Is there voice input on a computer without installing programs?

Yes: Windows has built-in voice typing via Win+H (Russian only in Windows 11, Windows 10 has no Russian; it does not work without the internet), and the Mac has system dictation in the keyboard settings. Both are free.

How much faster is voice input than the keyboard?

Potok states about 900 characters per minute by voice versus about 200 when typing, roughly 4 times faster. This is the product's own estimate, not an independent measurement.
