Voice input in Notion: how to dictate text

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~5 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

There is no data on built-in text dictation in Notion. But it is known for certain that Ctrl+Space, which Potok (potok.now) uses by default to record voice, is not taken in Notion's official shortcut list: the closest similar shortcut belongs to the system emoji picker on Mac. Potok recognizes about 900 characters per minute by voice.

There is no data on built-in text dictation in Notion. But it is known for certain what happens with Ctrl+Space, the very shortcut Potok uses by default. Below: what the check of Notion's shortcuts showed and how to dictate text on a page.

Does Notion have voice input, and what about Ctrl+Space

There is no data on built-in text dictation in Notion, neither for the desktop nor for the mobile apps on iOS and Android.

But we can say for certain what happens with Ctrl+Space (⌘+Space on Mac), the very shortcut Potok uses by default to record voice. Notion's official shortcut list has no such assignment: the program itself does not take Ctrl+Space for its own action. The closest similar shortcut is ⌃+⌘+Space on Mac, but Notion calls it the system emoji picker, not its own command; on Windows, other keys are assigned for emoji in Notion: Win+. or Win+;. Either way, how the recorded shortcut will behave in the finished app is not shown by this data, only that Notion itself does not use it.

What is available
Hotkey conflictsThere is no direct assignment of Ctrl+Space/Cmd+Space in Notion's official shortcut list. The closest documented shortcut is Ctrl+Cmd+Space on Mac, which Notion explicitly calls the system emoji picker (on Windows, Win+. or Win+; are given for emoji).

How to dictate text in Notion with Potok

  1. Open Notion, in the desktop app, in the browser or on a phone, and put the cursor in the block where you need to enter text.
  2. Hold the Potok hotkey (Ctrl+Space by default) and, without releasing it, say the text.
  3. Release the key: the recording goes to Potok's servers, the text is recognized and appears in the same block.
  4. Check the text and carry on working with the page.

Punctuation and capital letters are added automatically; you do not need to say “zapyataya” (comma) or “tochka” (period) separately. Potok's response time is about 0.4 seconds, so you do not have to wait for recognition on purpose. Recognition is in the cloud, on its own model trained on Russian speech, including terms and Russian text mixed with English words, which is handy for work notes with English terms. Potok states about 900 characters per minute versus about 200 with ordinary typing. The same way of dictating text works in other apps too, for example in Google Docs or in Excel. If the default hotkey is inconvenient, you can change it in the settings to a ready combination, your own key or a side mouse button.

Where voice input in Notion through Potok does not fit

We know of no limits specific to Notion.

Potok is a cloud service, with recognition on servers in Russia; it does not work without the internet. It has no voice commands or voice editing of text: it only inserts the dictated text into the field you chose. It has no offline mode and no phone app: it is a desktop program for Windows, macOS and Linux. If Notion ever assigns its own action to Ctrl+Space, how Potok will behave next to it does not follow from the data; in a conflict with any other program, the Potok hotkey can be changed in the settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does Notion have the Ctrl+Space shortcut?

No, Notion's official shortcut list does not include Ctrl+Space (⌘+Space on Mac). The closest similar one is ⌃+⌘+Space on Mac for the system emoji picker, not a Notion command.

How much faster is voice input than the keyboard?

Potok states about 900 characters per minute by voice versus about 200 when typing, roughly 4 times faster. This is the product's own estimate, not an independent measurement.

When is dictating better than typing?

Dictation is especially useful for long texts written off the cuff: email drafts, notes, replies in messengers, lecture notes, and also when hands are busy or tired (for example, with RSI). For short precise edits (one-word commands, code) typing is often faster.

How many characters per minute can you dictate?

By a model estimate, the average dictation speed with Potok is about 900 characters per minute versus about 200 characters per minute with ordinary typing, so speech is noticeably faster than the keyboard.

Is there voice input on a computer without installing programs?

Yes: Windows has built-in voice typing via Win+H (Russian only in Windows 11, Windows 10 has no Russian; it does not work without the internet), and the Mac has system dictation in the keyboard settings. Both are free.

Does voice input work with any microphone?

Any microphone the system sees as a recording device will do. In Potok you choose it in the app settings or in the tray icon menu; system access to the microphone is required.
