WMV to text

By the Potok teamUpdated ~2 min read

To convert a WMV to text, send the video to the Potok bot on Telegram and read the transcript in the chat. WMV stands for Windows Media Video, and the speech is taken from its audio track. Files up to 2 GB are accepted, and a long transcript arrives as a file.

Key facts

  • WMV is Microsoft's Windows Media Video format, and its files end in .wmv.
  • Older Windows programs, such as Movie Maker and some screen recorders, saved their output as WMV.
  • Old training videos and recorded presentations are often WMV files that nobody has converted.
  • Many files are small, so a one-hour WMV may be far below the size limit.

How to do it

  1. Find the WMV. Look in old project folders, an archive disk or the shared drive of your team.
  2. Play it once. If your player cannot open it, that is a player problem. Do not delete the file.
  3. Open the bot. Open @potok_now_bot in Telegram and press Start.
  4. Send the file. Attach it as a document. Up to 2 GB works, with the Upload button for large files.
  5. Read the text and export. Short results come in the chat, long ones as a file. Save as TXT, MD, DOCX, PDF, SRT or VTT.

What the result looks like

Example: an old training video as a transcript

[00:00] Speaker 1: This course covers the safety rules for the warehouse floor.

[00:06] Speaker 1: Rule one: always wear the yellow vest when a forklift is running.

Forgetting that slides are not spokenThe text lacks titles and numbers that appear only on screen.Add those from the slides by hand.
Throwing away the WMV once you have the textYou lose the only copy of the original footage, and it cannot be checked.Archive the WMV next to the transcript.
