Transcribing a Webinar.ru (MTS Link) meeting into text

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~9 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

MTS Link (formerly Webinar.ru) has a text transcript in Russian, but only on Enterprise and academic plans: the “Meetings” line does not have it, and on “Meetings Free” you cannot even download the video. Then the recording is sent to the Potok Telegram bot [@potok_now_bot](https://t.me/potok_now_bot) or the bot's mini app: the text arrives in the chat or as a file, 60 minutes per month for free.

A recorded webinar or meeting in MTS Link (the service used to be called Webinar.ru) cannot always be transcribed right in the personal account: its own transcript is built in, but it is available not on all plans. What to do next depends on which plan is connected.

Where to find a meeting recording in Webinar.ru (MTS Link)

The recording is turned on by the organizer or the administrator of the event; for webinars this usually happens automatically.

  1. Ready recordings are stored in the “Recordings” section in the files of the personal account.
  2. The organizer sends participants a link to watch the recording online.
  3. The final file is exported in MP4 format, but only after conversion: on the free “Meetings Free” plan this conversion and download are not available at all.

How to transcribe a Webinar.ru (MTS Link) meeting recording into text

If the plan allows downloading the recording but there is no transcript in the personal account, the file is turned into text by the Potok bot.

  1. In the personal account open “Recordings”, choose the meeting you need and download the converted MP4.
  2. In Telegram open @potok_now_bot and start it with the /start command.
  3. Send the bot the downloaded file.
  4. A small recording turns into text right in the conversation, a long one arrives as a separate file. Next to it the buttons “Summary”, “Tasks and deadlines”, “Ask”, “Other format” appear, and the breakdown by lines and timestamps are turned on in advance through /settings.

If the recording weighs more than two gigabytes or it is more convenient to work in a browser, the same file is moved to the bot's mini app: sign in by email or through Telegram, and the results are stored in the same place as in the bot.

The built-in transcript in Webinar.ru (MTS Link): who it is for

The “text transcript” is built into MTS Link and works in Russian, but it is turned on only on the Enterprise, Enterprise Total and academic plans: the whole “Meetings” line does not have such a feature on any plan. You open it like this: in the personal account choose the meeting recording and press the transcript in the upper right corner. Without a suitable plan this button simply will not be there, and then the bot or the web version of Potok will do. A broader overview of tools for turning a recording into text is in the comparison of audio-to-text transcription services.

When the bot will not fit for a Webinar.ru meeting

It is worth remembering: the Potok bot is cloud-based, recognizes the recording on servers in Russia and does not work without the internet. If the recording is not in Russian or you need translation into another language, the bot cannot cope with that. There will be no real names of participants in the finished text, only labels “Speaker 1”, “Speaker 2” and the like. The text appears in full after the file is processed, not during the meeting itself. You can compare with similar transcription services in the review of the Otter ai service in Russian.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a meeting recording on the “Meetings Free” plan?

No. Converting and downloading online recordings is not available on the free “Meetings Free” plan; this option appears on paid plans. You can watch the recording online by the organizer's link even without it.

Can a Zoom call be transcribed automatically?

Yes, several platforms have built-in meeting transcription: Zoom for cloud recordings, Microsoft Teams during the meeting, Google Meet on Google Workspace plans. The alternative is to record the sound and process it with a separate transcription service after the call. The Potok app does not do this kind of transcription, it is for live dictation; a call recording can be sent as a file to Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

How is transcription different from voice input?

Voice input is real-time dictation into the active text field. Transcription turns an already finished audio or video recording (a lecture, a call, a podcast) into text after the fact, often with diarization (splitting by speaker).

What is the difference between voice input and transcription?

Voice input is real-time dictation: you speak and immediately get text in the active field. Transcription turns an already finished audio or video recording (for example, a meeting recording) into text after the fact. The Potok app handles the first task, live dictation; finished recordings in Russian are transcribed by its Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Can meeting minutes be transcribed through voice input?

With Potok you can dictate the minutes live, speaking them during or right after the meeting. Transcribing an already recorded audio file of a meeting (a finished Zoom or Telemost recording) is a separate transcription task: such a file can be sent to Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Is Potok an investment platform?

No. Potok (potok.now) is a desktop app for voice text input on Windows, macOS and Linux: hold the hotkey, dictate, and the text is inserted into the active field. It has nothing to do with investment services or financial platforms with a similar name.

Transcribe a recording in Telegram

Voice messages, video notes, audio and video are transcribed by Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot: forward it a voice message from any chat, or send a file or a YouTube, VK Video or RuTube link. A short recording comes back as text in the chat, a long one as a file; timestamps and speaker labels can be turned on. The buttons give a short summary, tasks and deadlines, an answer to a question about the recording and export to TXT, DOCX, PDF or SRT. Large files, up to 2 GB, are easier to upload in the bot's mini app, via the Upload button next to the input field. The bot recognizes Russian speech; 60 minutes per month are free.
