Loom meeting transcription to text

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~9 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

A Loom recording already has a transcription: the Transcript tab with text and timecodes opens in the side panel; it is available on all plans, including the free Starter, and the language is detected automatically. If you need a separate text file, download the recording (MP4) and send it to the Potok bot [@potok_now_bot](https://t.me/potok_now_bot) or to the bot's mini app. The bot gives 60 minutes a month free.

A recording of a call in Loom usually already contains a ready transcription; the question is where to look for it and what to do if you need specifically a text file, not the built-in tab inside the service.

Where to find the recording itself

  1. Open your recording library on loom.com: all videos are stored there private by default, and only you have access.
  2. Find the meeting recording you need; if you need the file separately, download it with the Download button: Loom saves the video in MP4 format.
  3. If the recording was already sent to you as a link or a ready file, you can skip this step and go straight to the transcription.

Loom meeting transcription to text: how to get it

  1. Open the recording in Loom itself and switch to the Transcript tab in the side panel: the text with timecodes appears right there, and the language is detected automatically from the first seconds of speech.
  2. If you need a separate text file or a split by lines, send the downloaded MP4 to the bot @potok_now_bot in Telegram or upload it to the bot's mini app.
  3. Before sending to the bot, you can turn on the split by speaker in the settings, so that the ready text shows each participant's lines separately.
  4. Wait for the reply: a short recording comes as text right in the chat, a long one as a separate file, TXT or DOCX.

The built-in transcription in the program

Transcript in Loom works on any plan, including the free Starter: you do not need to pay for the transcription itself. Only the advanced formats cost extra: export to SRT and styled subtitles is available only on the Business + AI and Enterprise plans.

Loom detects the recognition language by itself from the first seconds of the recording, but you can change it by hand if it was detected wrongly. There is no speaker split in the description of this feature: if you need to divide the lines of several participants by role, a separate transcription through the bot or the web version fits this better.

When the bot will not fit

If the recording was not made in Russian or the text must be translated at once, the Potok bot is not suitable: it recognizes only Russian speech, and there is no translation. It also does not enter the call itself and does not connect directly to a Loom recording: you need to send the file or a link to the video yourself.

It tells participants apart by line numbers, not by names, so real names have to be entered in the text by hand. The service is cloud-based: recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without the internet. How to convert an audio file to text for free on a computer in general is covered in a separate article, and different transcription services are compared in a separate overview.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay for the transcription in Loom itself?

No, the Transcript tab is available on all plans, including the free Starter. Only Business + AI and Enterprise cost extra: export to SRT and styled subtitles.

Can I get the text of a Loom recording with speaker labels?

This is not described in Loom itself. To get text with labels, download the video and send it to the Potok bot, where the lines can be labeled “Speaker 1”, “Speaker 2” and so on.

What is the difference between voice input and transcription?

Voice input is real-time dictation: you speak and immediately get text in the active field. Transcription turns an already finished audio or video recording (for example, a meeting recording) into text after the fact. The Potok app handles the first task, live dictation; finished recordings in Russian are transcribed by its Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

How is transcription different from voice input?

Voice input is real-time dictation into the active text field. Transcription turns an already finished audio or video recording (a lecture, a call, a podcast) into text after the fact, often with diarization (splitting by speaker).

Can a Zoom call be transcribed automatically?

Yes, several platforms have built-in meeting transcription: Zoom for cloud recordings, Microsoft Teams during the meeting, Google Meet on Google Workspace plans. The alternative is to record the sound and process it with a separate transcription service after the call. The Potok app does not do this kind of transcription, it is for live dictation; a call recording can be sent as a file to Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Can meeting minutes be transcribed through voice input?

With Potok you can dictate the minutes live, speaking them during or right after the meeting. Transcribing an already recorded audio file of a meeting (a finished Zoom or Telemost recording) is a separate transcription task: such a file can be sent to Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Transcribe a recording in Telegram

Voice messages, video notes, audio and video are transcribed by Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot: forward it a voice message from any chat, or send a file or a YouTube, VK Video or RuTube link. A short recording comes back as text in the chat, a long one as a file; timestamps and speaker labels can be turned on. The buttons give a short summary, tasks and deadlines, an answer to a question about the recording and export to TXT, DOCX, PDF or SRT. Large files, up to 2 GB, are easier to upload in the bot's mini app, via the Upload button next to the input field. The bot recognizes Russian speech; 60 minutes per month are free.
