SRT renumber tool

By the Potok teamUpdated ~1 min read

The SRT renumber tool numbers the cues of an SRT file again from 1 after cutting or merging parts. Cues numbered 1, 2, 5, 6 become 1, 2, 3, 4 (result: 4 cues). It is useful when you joined or trimmed subtitle files and the numbers have gaps.

Facts that matter here

  • Formula: cue number = position in the file, starting from 1, applied to the numbers in the table below.
  • Assumption: cues keep their order in the file, and only the numbers change.
  • Renumber after the last edit, not before, so that the numbers stay in order.
  • Every number in the table follows from the formula above; none was measured on a real recording.

Reading the table

Take your own numbers, put them where the table has its example values and repeat the calculation by hand. Write down the result with its unit, so that nobody has to guess later whether it was minutes, megabytes or characters.
