AMR to text

By the Potok teamUpdated ~2 min read

To convert an AMR recording to text, send the file to the Potok bot on Telegram and read the transcript in the chat. AMR is an audio codec designed for speech on mobile phones, so files are tiny even for long calls and the 2 GB limit is never a concern. Export TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT or VTT.

Key facts

  • Some phone call recorders and older handsets save AMR files, often under a name made of a date and a number.
  • AMR keeps only the narrow band that speech needs, so music or wide room sound is poor in these files.
  • Call recorders sometimes capture one side of the conversation louder than the other.
  • Speaker labels are numbers, and a two person call usually shows up as Speaker 1 and Speaker 2.

How to do it

  1. Copy the file off the phone. Call recorder apps keep files in their own folder. Copy the AMR file to the device where Telegram runs.
  2. Listen to a few seconds. Check that both sides of the call are audible. If only one side is, the text will only contain that side.
  3. Open the chat. Open @potok_now_bot in Telegram and attach the file as a document.
  4. Turn on labels. For a call, speaker labels separate the two voices. Timestamps let you jump to a promise or a number.
  5. Export for the record. Choose DOCX or PDF if the text is evidence of what was agreed, and keep the original AMR with it.

What the result looks like

Example: a short call recording as a transcript

[00:00] Speaker 1: Hello, this is the repair shop about your washing machine.

[00:05] Speaker 2: Yes, is the part in yet?

[00:09] Speaker 1: It arrives on Friday, and we can come on Saturday morning.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes and how to fix them
MistakeWhat happensFix
Converting AMR to a bigger format firstThe conversion adds nothing: the narrow band is already gone, and the file becomes larger.Send the AMR as it is.
Assuming the recorder caught both sidesSome apps record only the microphone, so the other person is a faint murmur or missing.Test a short call and listen before you rely on the app.
Quoting numbers from the transcript without listeningPhone audio blurs digits such as fifteen and fifty.Play the call next to the text for every figure and name.
Deleting the file because the text looks fineYou lose the only way to settle a dispute about what was said.Keep the AMR next to the exported text.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AMR file?

AMR is an audio codec designed for speech on mobile phones. The files are small and sound like a phone line.

Why does my phone save calls as AMR?

Some call recorders and older handsets choose AMR because it stores speech in very little space.

Will the transcript of a phone call be complete?

That depends on the recording. If only one side was captured, only that side can appear in the text.

Can I send a long AMR call?

Yes. The files are small, so even a long call is far below the 2 GB limit.

Does the bot show who is speaking by name?

No. It shows numbered labels, and you replace them with names in the exported file.
