Make SRT and VTT subtitles from OGG files

By the Potok teamUpdated ~2 min read

An OGG container can carry an extra text layer next to the sound, yet many voice recordings in it have none, so SRT and VTT subtitles from OGG files come as separate files. Send the recording to Potok in Telegram, wait for the reply, then open both files in your player. Check 1 caption against the audio.

Facts that matter here

  • RFC 5334 says audio/ogg should be used when an Ogg bitstream predominantly contains audio.
  • Telegram Bot API accepts an .OGG file encoded with OPUS as a voice message.
  • Subtitles in Ogg are possible through a multiplexed Kate text stream (Kate is an overlay codec for text).
  • Potok accepts .ogg files up to 2 GB and reads them without a conversion step.

How to make subtitles from OGG files

  1. Start with the bot. Go to @potok_now_bot in Telegram, then send your .ogg recording. The limit is 2 GB per file, and the Upload button of the mini app is the way to send a big one.
  2. Mind this about the format. Subtitles in Ogg are possible through a multiplexed Kate text stream (Kate is an overlay codec for text).
  3. Get the subtitle file. Press the SRT or VTT export button; each caption carries a start and an end time. Then attach the file to the video and check how it lines up.
  4. A useful detail. Telegram Bot API accepts an .OGG file encoded with OPUS as a voice message.

What the subtitle file looks like

Example of SRT captions

[00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,400] Caption 1: Today we cover how glaciers shape valleys.

[00:00:03,600 --> 00:00:06,100] Caption 2: Ice moves slowly but carves deep channels.

[00:00:06,300 --> 00:00:09,000] Caption 3: Please note the diagram on the next slide.

[00:00:09,200 --> 00:00:11,800] Caption 4: The ferry leaves soon, so we need to board early.

What to avoid with OGG

Common mistakes and how to fix them
MistakeWhat happensFix
Assuming every OGG file carries a Kate subtitle streamPlayers find no captions inside and show only audioUse the separate SRT or VTT file instead
Sending an OGG with music under the speechCaptions miss words and timing drifts around loud passagesSend a cleaner OGG recording or trim the music part
Opening the VTT in a tool that expects only SRTThe editor rejects the file or shows broken line breaksPick SRT for old editors and VTT for web players
Merging the SRT lines into one paragraph to save spaceCaptions become too long to read on screenKeep each caption short and leave the original line breaks

Common questions

Can I send OGG files straight to Potok?

Yes. .ogg files up to 2 GB go to the bot as they are; there is no conversion step before recognition.

Will the captions be burned into my OGG file?

No. You get a separate .srt or .vtt text file, and your original OGG file stays unchanged.

Which apps and devices create OGG files?

Android MediaRecorder offers an OGG output format holding Opus data.
