In which countries 35 voice input services are registered

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~5 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

Among 35 voice input services and programs, 9 are registered in Russia, 9 in the USA, 2 in Europe, and one each in Australia and the UAE. For 2 the country is stated on the website but not confirmed, for 2 the legal entity is named without a country, and for 9 there is no data. Potok (potok.now) is not in the sample; it is a sole proprietor in Russia.

Besides code, voice input has a legal entity that releases it, and a legal entity has a country of registration. Among the 35 services checked, this picture turned out to be varied: from sole proprietors in Russia to companies abroad, some of which do not name a country at all.

How the legal entities and countries were counted

We went through potok.now's own verified database of 35 voice input programs and services and looked at the “legal entity” field on the official website or in the offer for each one. A country was counted only when it is named directly in this field, and not deduced from indirect signs such as the website's domain. If a record as a whole is marked as unverified, as with A-Golos, or the country appears only in secondary sources, as with Transkriptor, it went into a separate “claimed, not verified” column, and not into “yes” or “no”. If a legal entity is named but the country is not given in the record, as with Willow Voice and SuperWhisper, that is also its own column, and the country was not deduced from it. The status “sole proprietor” or “self-employed” was marked by the direct word in the same field. Another review from the same database, where the voice is physically processed, is built in a similar way.

In which countries the 35 services are registered

What this data does not show

Potok is not in this sample; it is not one of the 35 compared services but a separate product. Legally Potok is a sole proprietor, Russia, with payment by a Russian card in rubles. Potok is a cloud service: recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without an internet connection. Other cuts of the same database are collected in the general section of voice input statistics.

Frequently asked questions

How many of the 35 voice input services are registered in the USA?

9 of 35: Lispr, Aqua Voice, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Speechify, Win+H, Windows 11 Voice Access, Apple Dictation, Google voice input and Otter.ai, per our verified database.

For how many services did the country of registration remain unknown?

For 9 of 35 there is no data on the legal entity at all. For another 2 the legal entity is named but the country is not given, and for 2 the country is stated on the website but not confirmed independently; these are three separate columns, not one number.

What is voice input of text and how does it work?

Voice input is converting speech to text on the fly: the user speaks, and the program transcribes the sound with speech recognition technology (ASR) and inserts the resulting text into the active field, such as email, a messenger or a document. In Potok this works through a hotkey: hold it, speak, release, and the text is inserted.

How much faster is voice input than a keyboard?

Potok states about 900 characters per minute by voice against about 200 when typing, roughly 4 times faster. This is a product estimate, not an independent measurement.

Does voice input work with any microphone?

Any microphone that the system sees as a recording device will do. In Potok you select it in the app settings or in the tray icon menu; system access to the microphone is required.

In which cases is dictating better than typing?

Dictation is especially useful for long texts written off the cuff: drafts of emails, notes, replies in messengers, lecture notes, and also when your hands are busy or tired (for example, with RSI). For short precise edits (one-word commands, code) typing is often faster.
