How many of 161 apps have built-in dictation

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~4 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

Of 161 active apps in the database, the help confirms built-in dictation in 28, in 7 it is absent, and for the remaining 126 the documentation gives no answer, which does not mean dictation is missing there. Most confirmed cases are among AI chats and code editors: 13 of 28. In Potok (potok.now) dictation is not built in but cloud-based, as a separate app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Whether an app has built-in dictation is not always obvious from its interface: sometimes the feature is hidden behind a subscription or available only on the web. We checked 161 active apps from our database against official documentation, not against descriptions on websites. This is part of a collection of data on voice input in numbers.

How many apps actually have built-in dictation

We went through the potok.now app database and first excluded 3 closed services, so 161 active apps went into the count. For each one we checked the “built-in dictation” field against official documentation: yes, no, or unknown if the help says nothing about dictation. For example, in Word dictation is turned on through the menu Home → Dictate, while Google Chrome has no built-in dictation. “Unknown” is a gap in the data, not the absence of the feature: for 5 of the 28 apps with confirmed dictation, the help describes it only for the mobile app, and for desktop and web the question stays open.

Count from potok.now's own verified database: 161 active apps, the built_in_dictation.has field.

Where built-in dictation was found most often

Most confirmed cases are among AI chats and code editors: 13 of 28 in the category. In notes and wikis dictation is confirmed in 5 of 15, in CRM and task trackers in 3 of 23, among 1C and industry systems in 3 of 13. In documents and office programs 3 of 21 are confirmed, in browsers 1 of 10. In email and messengers there are no confirmed cases at all: 0 of 14 and 0 of 37, but those categories also have the most unknowns, 13 and 37 respectively.

Where Potok is not built in

Potok is a cloud service, recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without the internet. It is not built into any of the 161 checked apps. It is a separate program for Windows, macOS and Linux that inserts text where the cursor is, in any active window. Which services recognize speech locally and which in the cloud is covered separately in the article on where exactly your voice is processed during voice input.

Frequently asked questions

How many of the 161 checked apps definitely have built-in dictation?

Official documentation confirms built-in dictation in 28 of the 161 active apps in the database, in 7 it is definitely absent, and for 126 apps the help gives no answer.

Does “unknown” mean the app has no dictation?

No: “unknown” is a gap in the documentation, not the absence of the feature; for 126 apps the help simply does not mention dictation explicitly.

Is there voice input on a computer without installing programs?

Yes: Windows has built-in voice typing via Win+H (Russian only in Windows 11, Windows 10 has no Russian; it does not work without the internet), and the Mac has system dictation in the keyboard settings. Both are free.

When is dictating more efficient than typing?

Dictation pays off most for long texts written in one go, such as email drafts, notes, messenger replies and lecture notes, and also when your hands are busy or tired (for example, with RSI). For short precise edits (one-word commands, code) typing is often faster.

Does voice input work with any microphone?

Any microphone the system sees as a recording device will do. In Potok you choose it in the app settings or in the tray icon menu; system access to the microphone is required.

How much faster is voice input than the keyboard?

Potok states about 900 characters per minute by voice versus about 200 when typing, roughly 4 times faster. This is the product's own estimate, not an independent measurement.
