FAQ

How a summary differs from a task list in a recording transcript

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~5 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

"Summary" is a short summary of the recording: the type of conversation, the main points in 3-7 items and the tasks by speaker. "Tasks and deadlines" is a numbered list of who, what, deadline. Both buttons are under the transcript in the Potok Telegram bot @potok_now_bot. Next to them is an "Ask" button: the person writes their own question about the recording and gets an answer.

Under the transcript in the bot there are the buttons "Summary" and "Tasks and deadlines", and their results differ.

How a summary differs from a task list in a recording transcript

"Summary" is a short summary of the recording. It includes the type of conversation, the main points in 3-7 items and the tasks by speaker.

"Tasks and deadlines" is a numbered list, in each line of which there is who, what, deadline.

Both buttons are pressed under the finished transcript in @potok_now_bot. The bot accepts voice messages, video messages, audio and video in private messages, as well as files and links to YouTube, VK Video and RuTube. All transcripts stay in "My recordings", and you can open them again. How the summary works in general is covered on the page about the summary and tasks from a recording.

Which button to press: "Summary" or "Tasks and deadlines"

If you need to understand what the conversation was about and see the tasks along the way, press "Summary". If you need only a list of assignments with deadlines, press "Tasks and deadlines". If you are interested in your own question about the text, there is "Ask" next to them, and you can also make up to 5 buttons of your own with a ready-made request. When several people speak in the recording, the labels "Speaker 1" and "Speaker 2" are explained by the page on why the transcript has no names.

Where Potok is not the answer to this question

Both buttons belong to the bot, not to the dictation app. The Potok app for Windows, macOS and Linux is for dictating text by voice, and it does not transcribe finished recordings. In the bot, 60 minutes per month are free, and there is one subscription for the bot and the app. Potok has no apps for Android and iPhone, no voice commands and no offline mode: recognition is cloud-based, runs on servers in Russia, and Potok does not work without the internet. The bot recognizes only Russian speech.

Frequently asked questions

Which button should I press if I need only a list of assignments?

"Tasks and deadlines": it gives a numbered list of who, what, deadline. "Summary" is broader: it has the type of conversation, the main points in 3-7 items and the tasks by speaker.

Can I ask my own question about the recording instead of taking a ready-made view?

Yes: next to these buttons there is "Ask", where the person writes their own question about the recording and gets an answer. You can also make up to 5 buttons of your own with a ready-made request to the text.

How is transcription different from voice input?

Voice input is dictation in real time into an active text field. Transcription is turning an already finished audio or video recording (a lecture, a call, a podcast) into text after the fact, often with diarization (separation by speaker).

Can I transcribe a Zoom call automatically?

Yes, a number of platforms have built-in meeting transcription: in Zoom for cloud recordings, in Microsoft Teams during the meeting, in Google Meet on Google Workspace plans. The alternative is to record the sound and process it with a separate transcription service after the call. The Potok app does not do such transcription, since it is for live dictation; you can send a call recording as a file to the Potok Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Can I transcribe meeting minutes through voice input?

With Potok you can dictate minutes live, saying them as the meeting goes on or right after it. Transcribing an already recorded audio file of a meeting (a finished Zoom or Telemost recording) is a separate transcription task: you can send such a file to the Potok Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

What is the difference between voice input and transcription?

Voice input is dictation in real time: you speak and get text in the active field at once. Transcription is turning an already finished audio or video recording (for example, a recording of a meeting) into text after the fact. The Potok app solves the first task, live dictation; finished recordings in Russian are transcribed by its Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Transcribe a recording in Telegram

Voice messages, video notes, audio and video are transcribed by Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot: forward it a voice message from any chat, or send a file or a YouTube, VK Video or RuTube link. A short recording comes back as text in the chat, a long one as a file; timestamps and speaker labels can be turned on. The buttons give a short summary, tasks and deadlines, an answer to a question about the recording and export to TXT, DOCX, PDF or SRT. Large files, up to 2 GB, are easier to upload in the bot's mini app, via the Upload button next to the input field. The bot recognizes Russian speech; 60 minutes per month are free.
