Best voice input program for Mac in Russian: what to choose

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~10 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

There is no single independent ranking of the “best” voice input program for Mac in Russian: nobody publishes recognition accuracy comparisons, so the choice is built on different criteria, from offline mode to a personal dictionary for terms. The built-in macOS Dictation understands Russian for free. Potok (potok.now) has a free plan of 2500 words per week, and its hotkey inserts the recognized text into any field.

What matters more to you in voice input on a Mac: accuracy on professional terms or the ability to dictate with no internet at all? Voice input on a Mac can be had in three different ways: turn on the system Dictation for free, use voice input inside a separate service such as web mail, or install a separate app with a hotkey and a personal dictionary. Each option has its own set of limits: by language, by price, by whether recognition runs on the device or needs a network. For a user who dictates professional terms in Russian, the difference between the options is felt quickly: in some the model mixes up names and jargon, in others it does not.

What macOS already has for voice input in Russian

The easiest way to start on a Mac is with what is already on the computer: the system Dictation in macOS understands Russian, is turned on in the system settings and works for free, without installing third-party programs.

The built-in solution has a feature worth knowing in advance: it is unclear and not uniform whether speech recognition runs locally on the device or through the network. Apple does not publish a single scheme for all macOS versions and processor types, and behavior may differ on different Macs. If offline mode is essential, it is worth checking this on your own machine and not taking it for granted.

Accuracy on professional terms, proper names and mixed Russian-English speech is not publicly documented for the system Dictation either, so it can be compared with separate apps only on your own text and not by the manufacturer's claims. This also applies to the question of a personal dictionary of terms: there is no public data on how the built-in Dictation remembers rare names and jargon between sessions, so it is better to rely on your own check than on assumptions.

For a short note or a one-off message the built-in Dictation is often enough. For daily work with professional vocabulary it makes sense to compare it with a separate app on the same text before paying for a subscription, all the more so since most of the programs below have a free period precisely for such a test. Potok, for example, has 14 days of full access with no card attached: that is enough to dictate real work texts and compare the result with the built-in Dictation directly, and not by a description on a website.

Separate voice input programs for Mac: how to choose the best

Separate apps for Mac fall into several groups, and for Russian this division matters more than price. The first group is services that directly claim Russian as the main or one of the key languages. Diktuy states an accuracy of 95–98% on clean Russian speech and support for 50+ languages, although the country of its servers is not disclosed on the website (per diktuy.ru). In its privacy policy, v2txt.ru refers to 152-FZ and data storage in Russia (per v2txt.ru), and for those for whom the Russian jurisdiction of voice processing matters specifically, this is a separate argument in favor of the service.

The second group is programs with recognition right on the device, without sending audio to a server. GigaType is built on GigaAM, a neural network from Sber trained specifically for the Russian language, and works offline on a Mac. Molvi also keeps the model locally, supports Russian and English with automatic language detection, and promises the best quality on an NVIDIA GPU, otherwise a fast model on the processor. Voisty also recognizes speech on the device, with local models like Whisper Large V3 Turbo and NVIDIA Parakeet, and keeps Russian in a list of 90+ supported languages, but there is no data on quality for Russian specifically. All three options suit those for whom the main thing is that the voice not leave the device at all.

The third group is cloud services for which Russian is not a core language. Talkpad claims support for 100+ languages with automatic detection, but there is no data on quality for Russian specifically. For Typeless, also a general-purpose service with cloud recognition, there is no data at all in open sources on how it handles Russian. Lispr recognizes speech through a cloud service in the USA, also without public data on Russian. Before paying for a yearly subscription, it is sensible to check this on your own text and not on general descriptions on websites.

Potok is a separate case in this list: the model is trained specifically for Russian speech, with a personal dictionary for terms and names, and it works fully on macOS on a par with Windows and Linux, without a cut-down version for any system.

Prices and terms are taken from the services' official websites.

Where Potok is not the best option

Potok is a cloud service: recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work at all without the internet. If a Mac regularly ends up without a network or the audio must not leave the device at all, the programs above include offline options like GigaType or Molvi: they are exactly for such a scenario.

Potok does not understand voice commands for editing text: “udali poslednee slovo” (delete the last word) or “nachni zanovo” (start over) will have to be replaced with the keyboard and mouse, and the program only inserts what you said. It also does not transcribe finished recordings, meetings or voice messages: for that you need a separate transcriber.

Potok has no mobile app for iPhone, only clients for Mac, Windows and Linux, so dictation from a phone on the road will not work through it. And on volume: the free plan gives 2500 words per week, and for someone who dictates all working day this will run out quickly, and for such cases a paid plan without a limit is needed. More about how system Dictation differs from a separate app, and about voice input for a Mac with an Intel processor, is on neighboring pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is there voice input in Russian on a Mac without installing programs?

Yes, macOS has built-in Dictation: Russian is supported in it, and it is turned on in the system settings, without installing third-party programs. The capabilities and prices of separate macOS apps are collected in the table below; it is worth comparing them on your own text and not by claims on websites.

Is Potok suitable for a Mac with an Intel processor?

The processor type is not specified separately: Potok is stated for macOS in general, without singling out a version for Apple Silicon or Intel. The exact list of supported system versions is worth checking with the developer before installing.

Do I need the internet for dictation on a Mac?

It depends on the Mac. On a Mac with Apple Silicon, ordinary text dictation (messages, notes, but not the search field) is processed on the device; on Intel Macs and in some scenarios the audio goes to Apple's servers, and then the internet is needed. You can see exactly in System Settings → Keyboard: under the Dictation item it says whether the internet is needed and whether speech is processed on the device.

How do I turn on dictation on a Mac?

Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation → turn on and confirm “Enable”. Then start it like this: the microphone key (if there is one in the row of function keys), the dictation keyboard shortcut, or Edit → Start Dictation.

How do I dictate text on a MacBook by voice?

Turn on Dictation: the Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. Then put the cursor in a text field, start dictation (the microphone key, if there is one in the row of function keys, the dictation keyboard shortcut, or Edit → Start Dictation) and start speaking.

Voice input and a Mac on Intel: will it work?

Yes. System Dictation in macOS is present on Intel Macs too; on Intel Macs the audio for recognition goes to Apple's servers, so the internet is needed. Potok is an app for Windows, macOS and Linux, and it works on Intel Macs.
