How to transcribe a voice message in TrueConf (chat)

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~5 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

In the TrueConf chat itself there is no transcribe button for a voice message; there is only Transcripts for video conferences through TrueConf AI Server, if the company has turned it on. A specific voice message can be transcribed with the bot @potok_now_bot in Telegram, 60 minutes free per month. Typing text instead of a voice message right in TrueConf can also be done with Potok (potok.now).

A voice message came in TrueConf, and listening to it right now is inconvenient; you want to read it as text at once. There is no transcribe button under the message itself in the chat.

Why the transcript does not appear by itself

TrueConf's official materials do not describe a transcribe button under a specific voice message in the chat. The only documented function connected with speech recognition is Transcripts of video conferences through TrueConf AI Server: the item appears in the personal account only if the company itself has connected this function, and it applies to a recording of the meeting as a whole, not to a single voice message in a conversation. You can type text right in the TrueConf chat, since the message field accepts ordinary text, but that is not a transcript of an already received recording, just typing a new message. The documentation also says nothing about built-in voice dictation in TrueConf itself, neither that it exists nor that it does not. TrueConf runs on Windows, macOS and in a browser (Web), and the manufacturer's materials do not describe a separate function for transcribing a voice message for any of these versions.

How to transcribe a voice message in TrueConf in practice

  1. Open Telegram and find the bot @potok_now_bot.
  2. Send it the recording you need: forward the voice message if you can save it as an audio file from TrueConf, or send the file itself as a document.
  3. Wait for the reply: a short recording of up to two minutes comes as text at once, a longer one with timecodes.
  4. Take the finished text: you can copy it straight from the chat with the bot or export it as a file: TXT, DOCX, Markdown, PDF, SRT or VTT. All such transcripts are saved by the bot in the My recordings section, so you can return to the text later.

A similar way works in other messengers too; the general review is collected in the section about transcribing and dictating voice messages, and about built-in voice input in Telegram in the article about voice input in that messenger.

What dictation on a computer will not do here

Potok is a cloud service for dictating text on a computer: the voice goes to servers in Russia for recognition, and without an internet connection it does not work. It has no voice commands and no phone versions either, and it does not transcribe other people's voice messages at all; for that you need the bot. The bot has its own limits: 60 minutes of transcription per month for free, and it recognizes only Russian speech.

Frequently asked questions

Does TrueConf itself have a button for transcribing a voice message?

No: no such button is described in the TrueConf chat. There is a separate Transcripts function for video conferences through TrueConf AI Server, but it does not apply to ordinary voice messages in a chat.

Can Potok transcribe a voice message sent in TrueConf?

No: Potok is an app for dictation on a computer, not for transcribing other people's audio recordings. Voice messages, audio and video are transcribed by the bot @potok_now_bot: forward them there or send them as a file.

Can I reply in TrueConf with text instead of a voice message by dictating it?

Yes: the message field in TrueConf accepts ordinary text, and you can dictate it with Potok. The default hotkey does not coincide with the TrueConf hotkeys, so there is no conflict.

How is transcription different from voice input?

Voice input is real-time dictation into the active text field. Transcription turns an already finished audio or video recording (a lecture, a call, a podcast) into text after the fact, often with diarization (splitting by speaker).

Can a Zoom call be transcribed automatically?

Yes, several platforms have built-in meeting transcription: Zoom for cloud recordings, Microsoft Teams during the meeting, Google Meet on Google Workspace plans. The alternative is to record the sound and process it with a separate transcription service after the call. The Potok app does not do this kind of transcription, it is for live dictation; a call recording can be sent as a file to Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Can meeting minutes be transcribed through voice input?

With Potok you can dictate the minutes live, speaking them during or right after the meeting. Transcribing an already recorded audio file of a meeting (a finished Zoom or Telemost recording) is a separate transcription task: such a file can be sent to Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Try it on your own recording

Potok's Telegram bot transcribes a voice message, video note, audio or video, and its buttons make a summary and a task list. 60 minutes per month for free.

Transcribe a recording in Telegram

Voice messages, video notes, audio and video are transcribed by Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot: forward it a voice message from any chat, or send a file or a YouTube, VK Video or RuTube link. A short recording comes back as text in the chat, a long one as a file; timestamps and speaker labels can be turned on. The buttons give a short summary, tasks and deadlines, an answer to a question about the recording and export to TXT, DOCX, PDF or SRT. Large files, up to 2 GB, are easier to upload in the bot's mini app, via the Upload button next to the input field. The bot recognizes Russian speech; 60 minutes per month are free.
