How to ask a question about a recorded conversation in the transcription bot

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~4 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

To ask a question about a recorded conversation, send it to the Potok Telegram bot @potok_now_bot and press the "Ask" button under the transcript: the bot answers your question about the recording. Next to it are the "Summary" and "Tasks and deadlines" buttons. The bot transcribes 60 minutes per month for free.

If you need a single answer from a transcript, the Telegram bot @potok_now_bot has an "Ask" button.

How to ask a question about a recorded conversation in the transcription bot

  1. Send the bot a recording: a voice message, a video message, audio or video, or a file or a link to YouTube, VK Video or RuTube.
  2. Wait for the transcript.
  3. Press the "Ask" button under the transcript.
  4. Write your question about the recording and get an answer to it.

If you often need the same request, you can make up to 5 buttons of your own with a ready-made request to the text, for example "Email to a client" or "Minutes": the person writes the request themselves. All transcripts stay in "My recordings", and you can open them again. Only Russian speech is recognized. How to pass the bot a file by link is shown on the page about transcription from a direct link to a file.

If you do not need a question but a finished result

Next to the "Ask" button are "Summary" and "Tasks and deadlines". "Summary" is a short summary, the main points and tasks by speaker, and "Tasks and deadlines" is who, what and by when. More is in the section on the summary and tasks from a recording.

Where Potok cannot do this

Questions about a recording are the job of the bot, not the Potok app. The app for Windows, macOS and Linux is for dictating text by voice, and it does not transcribe recordings of conversations. @potok_now_bot handles those, and the subscription is shared between the app and the bot. What Potok does not have: apps for Android and iPhone, voice commands, offline mode. Recognition is cloud-based, on servers in Russia, and Potok does not work without the internet.

Frequently asked questions

Which buttons are under the transcript in the bot besides Ask?

Next to Ask are Summary and Tasks and deadlines. Summary is a short summary and the tasks by speaker, Tasks and deadlines is who, what and by when. Anything else the person writes as their own question.

Can I transcribe meeting minutes through voice input?

With Potok you can dictate minutes live, saying them as the meeting goes on or right after it. Transcribing an already recorded audio file of a meeting (a finished Zoom or Telemost recording) is a separate transcription task: you can send such a file to the Potok Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

How is transcription different from voice input?

Voice input is dictation in real time into an active text field. Transcription is turning an already finished audio or video recording (a lecture, a call, a podcast) into text after the fact, often with diarization (separation by speaker).

What is the difference between voice input and transcription?

Voice input is dictation in real time: you speak and get text in the active field at once. Transcription is turning an already finished audio or video recording (for example, a recording of a meeting) into text after the fact. The Potok app solves the first task, live dictation; finished recordings in Russian are transcribed by its Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Can I transcribe a Zoom call automatically?

Yes, a number of platforms have built-in meeting transcription: in Zoom for cloud recordings, in Microsoft Teams during the meeting, in Google Meet on Google Workspace plans. The alternative is to record the sound and process it with a separate transcription service after the call. The Potok app does not do such transcription, since it is for live dictation; you can send a call recording as a file to the Potok Telegram bot @potok_now_bot.

Try it on your own recording

Potok's Telegram bot transcribes a voice message, video note, audio or video, and its buttons make a summary and a task list. 60 minutes per month for free.

Transcribe a recording in Telegram

Voice messages, video notes, audio and video are transcribed by Potok's Telegram bot @potok_now_bot: forward it a voice message from any chat, or send a file or a YouTube, VK Video or RuTube link. A short recording comes back as text in the chat, a long one as a file; timestamps and speaker labels can be turned on. The buttons give a short summary, tasks and deadlines, an answer to a question about the recording and export to TXT, DOCX, PDF or SRT. Large files, up to 2 GB, are easier to upload in the bot's mini app, via the Upload button next to the input field. The bot recognizes Russian speech; 60 minutes per month are free.
