What is crosstalk in transcription?

By the Potok teamUpdated ~1 min read

What is crosstalk in transcription? It happens when two or more people are speaking at the same time, so their voices overlap in the audio. This is hard for people and software alike, since the system must separate the voices and often writes only the louder speaker.

Key facts

  • Interruptions, agreement sounds like "yes" over someone else, and arguments produce most of the overlap in real recordings.
  • A recogniser normally writes one stream of words, so the quieter overlapping voice is often dropped.
  • Speaker labels can also go wrong in these moments, because the system has to assign a mixed signal to one person.
  • Separate microphones for each person, kept on separate tracks, give the best material for later review.

What it looks like

[00:01:12] Speaker 1: So the deadline moves to the end of the--
[00:01:13] Speaker 2: --no, wait, I thought it was Monday?
[00:01:14] Speaker 1: [overlap] ...end of the week. <- both talking, words lost
[00:01:16] Speaker 2: Right, the end of the week.

Frequently asked questions

Why can software not transcribe both voices at once?

Most recognisers produce a single line of text, and two voices blended in one channel are hard to separate. The louder voice usually wins.

How common is crosstalk?

Very common in lively meetings and interviews. A few seconds of overlap can hide a whole phrase, so expect to review those moments by ear.

Can I reduce it when recording?

Ask people to wait for each other, use a separate microphone for each speaker where possible, and keep the room quiet. Meeting rules help more than software.

Do speaker labels solve overlapping speech?

They help the reader see who is talking, but they cannot separate two voices that overlap. In the Potok bot the labels are numbers, such as Speaker 1.

What should I do with the garbled parts?

Play the audio at the timestamp, listen a few times, and type the missing words into an exported DOCX or TXT. Mark any part you cannot make out.
