Wispr Flow subscription: what it is and what it costs

Mark Vesyoly · founder of Potok · ~6 min

Potok transcribes Russian speech; this site has been translated into English for convenience.

The Wispr Flow subscription is the paid Pro plan, which removes the weekly limit of the free version: 2000 words on a computer and 1000 words on mobile. Payment is monthly or yearly, in dollars: the yearly plan is cheaper per month. There is no standard payment with a Russian card. Potok (potok.now) has a higher free limit, 2500 words per week.

How much does Wispr Flow really cost if you use it every day, not a couple of times a week? For many people the free limit lasts no longer than the first few days, and then the question of the subscription comes up: what it gives and how to pay for it if there is no official payment with a Russian card. How fast the weekly limit is used up with daily dictation is covered in an honest half-year of voice input.

Prices are taken from the services' official websites.

How to pay from Russia and where the catch is

There is no official way to pay for Wispr Flow with a Russian card: on Windows, Mac and the web version the service accepts payment only in US dollars. For those without a foreign-currency card or a foreign payment service, this is the first barrier already: without a workaround the standard payment simply will not go through.

According to the site, a subscription could earlier be taken out from Russia by an in-app purchase in the App Store on iOS: payment there goes through an Apple account, not directly on the service's site. The final amount in rubles with this method is not confirmed and may differ from the dollar price on the site, because the App Store converts and rounds the amount itself. Before paying this way, check the current price in the app itself rather than relying on the figures from the site.

The monthly and yearly subscriptions are set up the same way; the difference is only in how often you are charged and in the final price. The yearly one is cheaper per month, but requires paying the whole year's amount in advance instead of paying gradually.

What a year costs

With monthly payment the bill comes every month at the same rate, and the full amount for the year turns out noticeably higher than when paying for the whole year in advance: the exact figures in both cases are in the plans table above. The difference between the two ways of paying usually covers the cost of the last month of use, so for those sure they will use the service all year, yearly payment saves a noticeable sum.

For those who simply want a bigger free volume without paying in advance, it is worth comparing the limit with other services: for example, Potok gives 2500 words per week for free versus 2000 for Wispr Flow.

When the extra payment is justified

Paying for the Pro subscription makes sense for someone who hits the weekly limit regularly, not occasionally: if 2000 words run out by the middle of the week, removing the limit saves time on pauses and on switching to the keyboard. Yearly payment is justified only if you are sure you will use the service all year; otherwise the overpayment for unused months cancels the whole benefit of the discount.

For those stopped by payment in dollars without a Russian card, rather than by the word limit itself, it is cheaper to look at services with direct payment in rubles (the full list of such comparisons is in the section Potok versus other programs). With Potok, for example, payment is accepted directly by a Russian card, and the legal entity is a sole proprietor in Russia. At the same time Potok is also a cloud service: speech recognition runs on servers in Russia, and it does not work without an internet connection, so switching does not remove the need to be online.
